In recent days, I have been earnestly seeking out any workable suggestions for getting reduced gas consumption and I dug up a bonus. The tips that actually work to improve MPG also save you from having to do additional work being required on your car brought on by poor driving habits.

If you are not spending $100s every year to maintain your car under fender to fender warranty or you have a masochistic streak which actually derives perverted pleasure from taking your dysfunctional auto for repairs and being taken to the cleaners with extra work being required on your car and having your automobile sit for days at the shop while you take the bus and fret about it like a father-to-be in a hospital waiting room then possibly care to use these bits of advice. Saving cash on gas and on work being required on your car are cousins.

Think about what else that cash you are wasting could do for you. Go on a trip? Get a better auto? Install a home theater system? For sure there are more useful things you can use your cash for than an endless stream of repairs on your auto!

In 2006 the average cost per gallon of gas was $2.14.
Now it is $3.09 across all 50 states.
Three years ago the cost of one single barrel of oil was fifty dollars and people were pissed.
In 2007 the cost of a barrel of oil is $100 and you don’t hear much griping because the broad public have fallen into despair.
Of course, the severe devaluation of the dollar is another factor. It can be noted that while the cost of gas has soared, the dollar value in decline has also made the cost of gas seem to go up faster than it actually has. Overall, it is a critical situation for the US economy and gas prices.
If you are not quite ready to surrender and still want to maximize your fuel efficiency and keep as much money as possibly in your pocket and out of the greedy, slimy fingers of oil company executives then there are things that you can do.

Do you remember the episode of the original Star Trek where Captain Kirk, the great commander of the Starship Enterprise beams down to a society that is dramatizing gangland Chicago and Kirk is trying to manuever an old style vehicle and control the gear shifting and barely makes his way down the street with many fits and starts and lurches? That was not a training manual! The point? Be a smooth driver. Frequent short stops aren’t helpful for your automobile or your automobile’s gas efficiency. So anticipate stops where possible. Letting your car wind down to a stop is a good way to increased MPG

Obey the speed limit. Speeding is a very costly way to drive. Flying above the maximum permitted speed may complete your trip in less time, but it also means more visits to the gasoline pump and possibly even a couple to the local traffic court. Oh, and regarding traffic court… be VERY cautious about driving near the courthouse… that is where all the lousy drivers have to go… that is one reason. Another thing to be aware of is that the city usually anticipates that they can get you another traffic citation while you are in the area since you were unfortunate to get one the first time. They will set something up like having a “no turn on red light” sign partially hid and they will give you a steeper penalty. I found just such a trap in Burbank There was a sign that said that violation at that traffic light would be a $380 fine! Can’t say that these people do not have a sense of humor!

Here are some facts about driving at higher speeds. Faster driving is going to impede your fuel mileage proportionately. So the faster you go, the bigger the gas efficiency hit on your vehicle. Driving seventy five mph as opposed to 65 mph will impede your fuel mileage by ten percent. Crusing along at 70 mph as opposed to 55 mph will lower your impede your fuel mileage by 18 percent. So stop viewing speed limit signs as suggestions and slow down. Adhering to the speed limit is the safest and cheapest way to drive.

Most other suggestions are totally contradictory or wrong… Some articles recommended don’t use your airconditioner which is not very helpful if you are a resident of or it is in the summer in the city! Then I found one article that says to keep your vehicle’s windows open for city driving but to use the AC when you are on the parkways because having the windows open while driving above 55MPH adds drag which increases gas consumption. Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Who cares? Does it improve MPG? No, probably not!

The most real solution to improve your MPG, with gasoline prices in the $3-4.50 range up and down over the last year or so is to sever your umbilical cord… the one that binds you to the gasoline pump and shed your chains of slavery to the oil companies and….

Convert to a hydrogen engine!
How would it be you never needed to pump another gallon of gas again?
Convert your gas engine to hydrogen.
If you do a partial (hybrid) conversion then you should see increased MPG of up to 30% maybe more.
If you do this and also add acetone to your gas tank (which will save you another 25% or so) then you will have reduced your gas consumption by a combined 50%! Put in about 2-3 ounces of acetone per 10 gallons of gas and the gas will vaporize less easily and you improve your MPG by 25% or more.
If you do a full gas to hydrogen conversion then you will never have to pump another gallon of gas for the rest of your life. It is very simple to do, costs next to nothing, doesn’t pollute the environment and you will enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping to conserve resources instead of consuming more than your fair share.
